Margaret River in winter is known for its world-class surf breaks. The annual Margaret River Pro Surfing Competition often takes place in April or May to kick-start the winter surfing season. Surfers of all abilities will enjoy the winter surf breaks around the region, while beginner groms can join a winter surf lesson or two.

4. Wine time is here...

For those that enjoy a good drop of vino, winter down south is the perfect time to sip your way through the region's cellar doors, stretching from Busselton, Margaret River and beyond to Walpole and Denmark. Cellar doors get a lot more cosy in winter as they light up the log fires, so get ready to settle in and sip your way through some of the best drops this side of the equator.

5. Campfires are back!

Winter down south means caravan and campers can once again light up a cosy campfire (but always be sure to check the campsite restrictions and Emergency WA websites first, just to be sure!) At our caravan parks Busselton Lazy Days Caravan Park and Walpole Rest Point Caravan Park we've got fire pits for caravan and campers to enjoy this winter.

6. Winter rains = waterfalls.

Forget what TLC said ("don't go chasing waterfalls"), we say DO go chasing waterfalls. Winter down south fills up some of the region's most impressive waterfalls. Some of our favs are Quinninup Falls in Margaret River (culturally sensitive site so walk with respect for Wadandi Boodja), and Fernhook Falls in Walpole, which are at their most impressive in winter.

There's so much on during winter down south, so be sure to check out the impressive line up of wintery South West events - most focused on delicious food and wine, with the occasional arts and culture event also in the mix.

8. You'll escape the crowds in winter.
